MANAGING ROAD RISK -- "CRASH" WORKSHOP

MANAGING ROAD RISK -- "CRASH" WORKSHOP - 11th February 2010 -- Unity the Union, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent .

Managing the risks to employees who drive at work requires more than just compliance with road traffic legislation.

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires employers to take appropriate steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees and others who may be affected by their activities when at work. This includes the time when they are driving, or riding at work, whether this is in a company or hired vehicle, or in the employees own vehicle.

As part of getting the message home, the Revitalising Network is sponsoring a presentation of "Crash Course". Crash course is a high impact presentation which addresses the awful statistic that 30% of all fatal traffic collisions involve someone on a work-related journey and a further 20% involve the journey to and from work and accounts of the 20 fatalities and 250 seriously injured each week. Even when companies put their drivers through defensive driving courses these do not often challenge the attitudes of risk-taking drivers.

"Crash Course" is a multiagency initiative involving Staffordshire Police Collision Investigation, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, Staffordshire County Council and Victim Support. The presentation puts participants in the position of becoming a victim, offender or a person suffering bereavement. This is done by people with real experiences, both personal and professional. Many companies have already recognized the benefits of this approach. This workshop will be to encourage trade associations, trades unions and individual employers to take the message forward into action.

HSE itself is already promoting messages on road related risk -- visit the HSE webpage at http://www.hse.gov.uk/roadsafety/index.htm
